Story of my Android Migration – Thanks to Windows 6.1!

Last week, one of the frustrating weeks of this year for me.  I got numerous problems with my windows based biz phone. I got excellent review for that product, which made me to buy that. After buying and installing some apps, I got into several troubles. Installation of some applications failing with permission issue. Googling directed me to change some registry value, for that they told me an application similar to regedit. Installation of that apps also getting failed because of same permission issue. 🙂

whenever I used to browse, the head-ache starts. The phone will hang for ever. you will see key pad lights glowing, display switched off. No other option except pulling the battery out and reboot it.

Both booting and shut down option is too long. after very few apps installation, the phone becomes sluggish. aahhh

Last few days became nightmare for me. even after hard resetting, it keeps on hanging. Clearing temp files, cookies din’t help me much.

Consultation at service point is discouraging. They can work on this reboot issue. But nothing to do it with speed because, all windows phones are like that only 😦

I cant keep this growing. I looked for alternative options. If you ask me the OS, I have no choices other than Android. Regarding the brand, I am much interested to test HTC this time. after reading the reviews, specs finally I had three options before me

HTC wildfire – Full Touch – Android 2.1 – 528 MHz

HTC legend – Full Touch – Android 2.1 – 600 Mhz

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini pro – Semi Touch & Qwerty – Android 1.6 upgradable – 600 MHz

I left with no option for Qwerty with Android in HTC. I am not looking for more fun. The features of media player or FM radio may not convince me. My main concerns were speed, apps, mails & IMs while moving.

Finally it’s Xperia X10 mini!

Is this a success story or failure story? 😦

528 MHz

BSNL 3G speed @ Pudukkottai

bsnl 3G @ pudukkottai

bsnl 3G @ pudukkottai

Myself, from a god forsaken place called Pudukkottai in Tamilnadu. As DIT promised, they will make every district headquarters covered with 3G within this year. It is in progress. I was getting 380 kbps till today morning. Amazing.. The speed is good from the afternoon…. Hope they will start the service soon with full capability.

Hard Reset in Samsung Omnia Pro B7320!

This is an interesting like I came across! http://www.pspmyspace.com/omnia/2008/09/how-to-hard-res.html

My omnia hangs now and then for the past few days. Dont know why. I decided to do one hard reset once. I am okay with the loss as Google Sync takes care of all my contacts and mails.

There are couple ways mentioned in the page I quoted above! I tried the second one

Typing the above will reset the phone, and restart it couple of times to ensure the factory settings.. (I doubt, I saw some internet profiles, menu items were still there!!!)

Connecting to GPRS or 3G from Vista with Samsung Omnia – HowTo

This may be a nice event yesterday, when I need to couple my mobile with Vista based laptop. Here comes a howto!

  1. Power on your laptop and login. make sure that it is not connected to internet.
  2. Power on your omnia pro and connect it with laptop (I used USB)
  3. In the main menu of your mobile, choose Internet Sharing
  4. You will get internet sharing window, select USB as your PC Connection and the GPRS/3G profile under network connection
  5. Press Connect!

Thats all!

I am able to reach 130~150 Kbps with BSNL EDGE and 15 to 25 Kbps (!!!) with BSNL GPRS connection. Amazing upto 2.8 Mbps with 3G network!

BSNL 3G – to be or not to be!

Recently I became a frequent traveler. I evaluated many fast – wireless internet solutions like photon +, reliance bb etc. They are good enough to give me good speed where ever they have coverage. To have a cost effective solution, I got a BSNL 3G data card from Coimbatore. After 2 to 3 months, here comes my review.

BSNL 3G

BSNL 3G

I checked the service in Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Ariyalur, Chennai and Tiruchy. Most of the places are not announced officially. I guess, testing is in progress.

Chennai, Erode, Tiruppur are one among the best. I am able to reach peaks. Email with attachments are getting downloaded at no time. Browsing is pakka. I am able to reach the same speed offered by photon + or reliance broadband wireless highspeed internet.

Coimbatore – I am not that much satisfied. Though it is good inside the city, it is very bad at the suburbs like Singanallur which is just 8kms away from central part of CBE. In addition, it is frequently getting disconnected inside the city.

Tiruchy is not implemented fully I guess, since I am able to connect only with Edge, though it shows 3G icon.

My recommendation is – BSNL promises all the district headquarters will be covered with BSNL 3G before end of this year. Where there is no coverage, GPRS or Edge is working fine (I tested in remote places of Tamilnadu. I am able to reach 100 KBPS max). If you want a cost effective solution, You can select this. I want BSNL to be more sensitive towards this because their support, service are worst in their categories!

Please see my earlier posting on the BSNL 3G setting

BSNL 3G GPRS setting – Chennai and Tamilnadu

Earlier I wrote about my difficulty in working with 3G connection. I got a new sim today and I am able to get connected with decent speed. Here is the connection details.

set the APN as gprssouth.cellone.in bsnlnet
(The older APN gprssouth.cellone.in is not working for the past two days in my area–updated on 22-nov-2010)
Username and password as your 10 digit phone number (94xxxx)
no ip no proxy. keep the authentication as none. Select your internet profile as your default. restart for safety. thats it.

With samsung and nokia phones people are able to browse without any issues seems. But I have problem with Omnia. I am facing trouble in indoors. Being a dual mode phone, it automatically switches to Edge or GPRS 2G connectivity.

In addition, please be informed that customer support guys are giving false gprs settings.

finally, I got a lovely gift from BSNL :)test

Windows mobile Active Sync with Google – Error support code 0x80004005

I use google to sync my mobile contacts, tasks, calendar etc from my windows mobile.

While sync’ing with the site, it stops with an annoying support code 0x80004005 😦 http://jlvillaraza.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!BDFB7845C22E26B6!1662.entry was helpful in this. Uncheck all items like email, task etc except Contacts. Sync contacts first. then continue with other items one by one. It worked finally.

By the way, who is the killer here, windows or the google? 😉
